Newborn babies
Newborn babies are usually best photographed when they are around three weeks old.
Before that time they often don't like to open their eyes! After a month or
more has passed, they start to change alarmingly quickly, so many parents decide
to have portraits done at around three weeks. Every baby is different, of
course, and you can have yours photographed at any time that you feel is right.
If you already have children, you are more than welcome to have pictures taken of
your baby with them - you may also want pictures including yourselves. Basically,
we can shoot whatever you want.
All the photographs are taken in the comfort of your own home, using natural light
wherever possible. If the light is a problem on the day of your shoot, I use
a diffused constant low energy light source - I don't use any flash. I will
bring with me white and black throws which are ideal for forming a neutral backdrop.
You don't need to provide any props, but if your baby responds to a particular toy,
for example, then it always helps to have it on hand. Please try to dress
your baby in a plain, neutral vest and / or sleep suit. It usually works out
best if baby has been recently fed, but not to the point that they want to go back
to sleep!
If your baby refuses to co-operate (it happens!) then we can simply arrange a re-shoot
on another day. There is no fee for the shoot itself, so we can keep trying
as many times as you like (the record so far is four attempts!). Each session
normally lasts between one and one and a half hours. If you don't think the
session went as well as you'd hoped after seeing the results, please say so and
I will happily come out and re-shoot. Sometimes babies just aren't in the
mood, and you're the best judge of whether the pictures reflect their character,
so don't heistate to ask me to come back.
After the shoot, I will edit a selection of images and send you proof prints in
the post, which are yours to keep. I will visit you again once you've
had a chance to look through the proofs, at which point you can decide exactly which
pictures you want and what you want to do with them. The options in terms
of mounting and framing are very flexible, as all my frames and mounts are made to
order. You can, of course, just order prints if that's what you want.
There is absolutely no obligation to order anything. If you decide that you
don't like the proofs I send you, then you won't owe me a penny. This is a
completely genuine offer, but obviously I am confident you will like the results.
